About this module

Malware is malicious software that does an attacker's work automatically: stealing data, encrypting files, spying or giving remote control. This module covers the main families — viruses, worms, Trojans, ransomware, APTs — and, just as importantly, how they are analyzed, detected and stopped. It is taught defense-first, and the lab uses only a harmless test file.

What you will learn

  • What malware is, its parts and entry points
  • Trojans, their types and ports
  • Viruses vs worms, and the virus life cycle
  • Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs)
  • Ransomware and fileless malware
  • Malware analysis, detection and countermeasures

How to study: read a lesson → answer its 2 "Check yourself" questions → do the lab → pass the assessment with 80%+. Lessons 1, 2, 3 and 6 are the most tested. The lab uses only the harmless EICAR test file.
