Remmina
Remote desktop client for RDP, VNC and SSH on Linux.
Safe to try on your own machine. Spin up your Kali Linux lab and practice away — on any system you own or have permission to test. That’s exactly how the pros learn.
Definition
Remmina is an open-source remote desktop client, mainly used on Linux, to connect to and manage remote computers.
Establish remote graphical sessions using protocols such as RDP, VNC, SSH and SPICE.
Secure remote administration, authorized system management, and access to security lab environments.
Key features
Connect to Windows systems using Remote Desktop Protocol.
Remote graphical access to systems running a VNC server.
Remote terminal access through Secure Shell.
Save settings for frequently accessed systems.
Manage several remote connections at once.
Important commands
remminaLaunch the Remmina application.
remmina -c <file>.remminaOpen a connection using a saved profile.
ssh user@192.168.1.10Connect to a remote system over SSH (terminal client).
xfreerdp /v:192.168.1.10 /u:usernameStart an RDP connection using FreeRDP, if installed.
vncviewer 192.168.1.10Connect to a VNC server using a VNC viewer, if installed.
Practical examples
remmina
Purpose Opens the graphical application.
remmina -c lab-server.remmina
Purpose Opens the named connection profile if it exists.
ssh student@192.168.1.10
Purpose Establishes an SSH terminal session with the given user and IP.
xfreerdp /v:192.168.1.10 /u:student
Purpose Starts an RDP connection using FreeRDP; the host must permit RDP.
Important points
- Client vs server: Remmina is the client; the remote system must run a compatible service.
- Authentication: Valid credentials and permissions are required.
- Network requirements: The host must be reachable and firewalls must allow the traffic.
- Security: Prefer SSH and encrypted connections; do not expose remote admin to the internet unprotected.
- Credential safety: Do not save passwords insecurely or share profiles with sensitive data.
Common use cases
Manage authorized remote computers.
Connect to Windows VMs through RDP.
Access remote Linux terminals via SSH.
Reach VMs used for defensive and pen-testing practice.
